We're very pleased to introduce a new feature which we're sure a lot of our users will be interested in. If you run or manage a website then listen up.
Under the Events section we've added a new section called Site Integration, which is a feature that allows you to tap into the iCompete event index and list events on your own website. You can generate listing for your own website from a number of sources including:
In addition to drawing from a number of different sources you have the ability to customize exactly how the resutls are displayed on your webpage! Just modify the CSS included in the generated HTML to alter how the events are listed. (we've provided a breif example of this in the Hints and Tips section) We hope this is a feature that will provide a valuable service to those who run a website and if there's any way we can impove this feature please contact us and let us know how we can make this service better. If you have any questions about this new feature or need any assistance in setting it up feel free to contact us and we'll do our best to help you out.
So I've had a few people e-mail with some thoughts and/or ways to make the site better, so i figured I'd take this spot to address those suggestions.
The first suggestion I had was to create a registration system for events and accept payments for an event VIA paypal. I really like this idea, as it would be very useful to be able to signup for a tournament or seminar over the internet and confirm your placement. Of course this type of thing would probably be subject to making weight for whatever weight class you're competing in, but regardless I thought it was a great start. Unfortunately this suggestion has one MAJOR drawback - Fraud. Because anyone is able to submit an event there is nothing stopping someone from entering a legitimate event posing as the event promoter and collecting payment for this fraudulent event. For this reason, payment, really isn't possible. I suppose I could take out the payment aspect of the registration, but I'm not sure what good that would do. The other suggestion I received which I really liked was to create a myspace for martial artists... ok - done laughing? just keep reading... The idea was to create a system where by users of iCompete mark (similar to how you add favorites) events as events they are planning to compete it. After an event has taken place the creator of the event could go back in and view everyone who said they were planning to compete in an event and assign awards to that user. For example, they could go in and mark who came in 1st in a certain category. From here you could have you're own publicly viewable profile which would include what events you competed in, and how you did. We could allow comments within a users profile and therefor each user would establish a profile page of sorts which would list all their accomplishments. I'd REALLY like the communities feedback on these ideas and any others that come up - so if you have something to say fire me an email at suggestions@iCompete.org
After many hours of working on this site and extensive testing, iCompete is finally open to the public. For a complete description of the iCompete website please visit our welcome page.
As with anything I'm sure there are going to be minor problems with the site so I'd like to request that you just be patient and we'll do our best to make this into a great website. We're also VERY interested in your feedback in regards to problems you encounter or ideas that you think would make the site better, so if you have anything to say please get a hold of us using the information on the contact info page. This is a community site and as such its only as good as its user base, so I would like to encourage everyone to share this site with all those who are interested and hopefully we can make this into the definitive source for martial art and combat events. |
